SZA revels in pushing her own brand of cryptically romantic pop through the looking glass of amorphous electronic pop. On her debut EP See SZA Run, the Maplewood, New Jersey native refracted her soulful voice through a prism of billowy synth lines, chilly drum machines, and dream-logic lyricism. "Ice Moon", from her upcoming EP, S, continues her experimentation, building gradually from a solitary playhouse keyboard line into a dense cloud of technicolor production from Felix Snow and Patrick Lukens.
SZA’s voice is appropriately languid as she saunters from one enigmatic couplet to the next without explanation. "Show me the way to your hiding place/ I think I wanna go, go, go, go there," she coos in the chorus, before coldly adding, "Go to church if you’re scared." SZA remains alluring yet inscrutable, ready to follow any playful come-on with a schoolyard taunt before disappearing into the ether.
